Double breasted suits are traditionally considered a formal suit made for businessmen. It comes usually in very structured and standard designs and finishing. However, this year Spring/Summer 2009 many designers have made double breasted suits and double breasted jackets more relaxed by adding some deconstructed elements within for even a possible smart casual wear.
Retaining its formality with good fit around the arms and waist but changed its collar without adding any lapels are Dries Van Noten (left) and Dolce Gabbana (right):
On the other hand, the use of more casual fabrics and colors brings down the formality largely expected from the design of the suit. John Varvatos (right) also deconstructed the collar that further took away the suit's formality. In the middle is Roberto Cavalli choosing fabrics to play down the suit. On the right, Dries Van Noten chose a Cyan-like color to tone down the formally designed double breasted suit.:
The double breasted jackets are another great way to wear now instead of your usual blazers or sport coats. Even the formality found in Bottega Veneta (left and middle) for both jackets, it was worn with patterns like stripes and checks as well as baggy pants or white pants to tone its seriousness down. Hermes (right) also did a great job with the double breasted jacket with casual fabric (possibly cotton) and pairing it off with t-shirt, gray loose pants with sandals, and most importantly a scarf.
