It seems to function like a sports jacket creating a more formal presentation but yet its design makes it a much casual one. So wearing a simple collared shirt can look very different putting on a nice fitting cardigan above it. If you dare, play it with colors and it will really spice up your dress-down wardrobe. Paul Smith (below) created a more 1980s look with a slightly oversized cardigan but paired against well-fitted pants without making it look sloppy.
