Mens Watches
More than a Timepiece

One of the most important mens jewelry has always been mens watches. There is undoubtedly that even a man who does not like to wear cufflinks, bracelet, rings, or any other jewelry might not mind having a nice watch around their wrist. It functions not only as a time teller but also projects a certain level of style for the man.

It speaks a lot about whether the man would like to look dressy, sophisticated, sporty or even rugged. Just look at the type of watch chose to be worn during a particular occasion and you will know to a certain extent his character and style.

Many men have wrote to me asking about dress watches. This type of watch is generally worn to match against their business attire or an important event or function that they need to attend.

So it is particularly important to have a certain level of formality with the watch. I would greatly recommend wrist watches that are relatively slim and simple for their dressier style that is both appropriate for dinner occasions as well as formal day wear.

Below is a prime example of a nice mens dress watch (Piaget Altiplano 40mm).

Mens Dress Watches

Over these few years, there has been greater interest for wrist watches with big diameter or “oversized” case. Whether they are suitable for formal events or dressy enough is up for contention, however they can fray the dress shirt cuffs with its large size.

Some men are looking for value within their mens watches besides being able to make a fashion statement. The value of the wrist watch boils down to the type of precious metal used for the case (gold, platinum or titanium), design and patterns on the dial, the mechanism used (mechanical or quartz where mechanical watches are definitely more precious but less accurate than a quartz), use of jewelry within its design, and lastly the brand of the watch

Here are some simple information in terms of style and mechanism that adds value to mens watches:

Chronograph:
They are like stop watches. Usually there are 2 – 4 sub-counters on the dial that measures fractions of a second, minutes, hours, tachymeter to measure speed, or even telemeter to measure distance.

Mechanical:
These involve a set of complicated system of precise mechanisms like coils, gears, and springs. The system functions base on a main spring within the watch. This main spring has to be wound either by hand or by "automatic movement" (i.e. self winding).

Automatic:
These are also known as self-winding watches or perpetual watches. It is actually a mechanical watch with a self-winding mechanism. The movement of the wrist causes the rotor, a metal weight attached to a winding mechanism, to pivot freely on its staff in the centre of the movement. The winding of the rotor is based on action and movement triggered on the watch. The rotor’s motion then winds the mainspring to power the watch. Once fully wound, they should be able to run for about thirty-six to forty-eight hours.

Perpetual Calendar:
This is considered one of the highest achievements among wrist watches because it involves many minuscule mechanical parts to provide date, day, month, automatically adjust for leap years and months with 30th and 31st without any manual intervention. Such high precision standard drives the value of these calendar complications.

Choosing the right type of mens watches also boils down to what your daily activities or dressing is. If you are involved in many sporty activities or dressing in more casual attire, then sport watches or diving watches would definitely be more suitable for your lifestyle.

There is also growing passion for pilot watches among men recently because of their generally intricate mechanism where they offer dual time zone, countdown timer with alarms, and even elapsed time chronometer. Some men have found all these mechanisms presented on and within their wrist watch attractive and also find them masculine based on their design.

Therefore, the preference of mens watches is greatly dependent on personal choice and lifestyle. Wearing the right wristwatch for the right occasion and right attire is critical to ensure the flow of style is correct. It never looks right wearing a sporty diving watch with formal attire during an important dinner function. Always remember that the dressier the watch, the simpler and slimmer it is.
