Question:
Please help settle an argument. Can I wear black shoes and socks with off-white pants? I was told brown would be better, but I thought black is neutral and goes with anything. Do the socks have to match the pants??
Answer:
When you are wearing an off-white pants with black shoes, please avoid wearing black socks. It is actually more advisable for your to try wearing light brown socks instead of black. The color of the socks should be matching the pants rather than the shoes. It completes the transition of colors from the pants to the socks and finishing it off with your black shoes.
The Europeans would actually be wearing highly contrasting colored socks when pairing between off-white pants with black shoes. It actually creates good fashion statement having such highly enhanced that matches with the overall outfit that you are wearing. But this is not commonly seen among the Americans. I have attached a picture for your reference on wearing such contrasting colored socks in white pants and black shoes. Below picture was extracted from The Sartorialist
