Mens Fashion Advice 97
Is It Trendy To Wear Double Breasted Suits Now?

Question:

What is the status of a double breasted suit? When is it appropriate to wear one? I have a black suit from late 90's. Could I wear one to an evening party? Can I add a shirt with color?

Answer:

Double breasted suits are considered a classic style suit. It is always suitable for any season and year. However, the only difference you find between seasons and years are the finishing and style that is designed. Currently the double breasted suits are designed a lot fitter than your 1990s styles. I believe your 1990s suit should be fitted more loosely. If it is one with a classic fit where the it is not overly baggy, then I think it should still be suitable to be worn in this era.

If you intend to wear it to an evening party, it is absolutely fine. It is indeed a more formal suit style than a single breasted suit. Adding dress shirts with colors is not a problem since the suit itself is black. It can bring the fashion style in you. I would suggest medium blue for the dress shirt. Then go for a brighter tie to really give the contrast between the shirt and suit. For more ideas on colors to match with your suit, refer to my ebook, Dress for Success.
