Because black is an achromatic color that is of the darkest color. So it can be easily matched with most colors. It is just the effect that you like to create. If you want a winter feel, then your charcoal definitely works well to create that look. However, should you want something more Spring/Summer, then of course your choice would be brighter and lighter colored pants like cream, light yellow, light lime green... etc. If you want to have an effect which is more serious, then navy colored pants works well.
