Fashion Advice 65
How many to suits and shirts to own when starting new job?

Question:

I will be starting a new job, whereby i will be required to wear a suit everyday. How many suits should I buy? Also how many shirts should I buy? I was thinking 5 but my girlfriend said i should have at least 10 if not more?!

Answer:

You should at least go for 3 mens suits if possible. Traditionally, it is safe to have one Navy, one Charcoal, and one Dark Gray. But there is no hard and fast rule now. I would rather go for a two plain suits and one maybe with pattern like chalk stripe or pin-stripe.

If you want to go for 10 suits, it is fine as long as your wallet permits it. I think it would still be advisable to slowly accumulate your suits over time.

For shirts, it is a very different case. You can do a lot mix and match with your dress shirts against your suits. Assuming your suits are just the 3 basic suits mentioned above, you can still play around with the different patterns and colors of the dress shirts to spice up your look. It is possible to make it seem that you are not wearing the same suits by having nice colored and/or pattern shirts. I would say at least 5 - 6 different types of dress shirts for a start is important.
