Fashion Advice 60
Matching Stripes and Checks Together

Question:

Great site! I have a corporate holiday party in 2 days. Being in my 30's, I prefer the sleek, contemporary look but in a subtle way (don't want to stick out). I got a navy pinstripe suit (stripes have normal spacing) and thought about adding a blue/white checkered shirt with a blue/red stripe tie. I've read the section on mixing patterns and still am worried that my choices above might come across as "clownish". What is the best way to add red into a blue pinstripe suit?

Answer:

I think your idea is on the right track. In actual fact, your choice of stripes against check shirt is good but make sure that their spacing is differentiated. It is not an easy attempt I must say. Try it and see if the impact gives you a "too much" effect. If yes, then the spacing between the shirt and tie is too close. Your intention to have a red/blue stripe tie is a very subtle way of bringing in red into your mostly blue combination. Another way is to try having a red pocket square.
