Fashion Advice 46
Matching Dress Shirts & Ties
Against Complexion

Question:

in terms of color coordinating to your complexion, are there different roles that the shirt and tie are supposed to play? for someone with darkish hair and lighter skin I would think it makes sense to have a dark suit so it appears to be a continuation of the hair. but do the shirt and tie play different roles in enhancing the face or not really - just whatever works?

Answer:

Basically you have a highly contrasted complexion (dark hair and fairer complexion) - refer to Coordinating Against Men's Complexion. What it means is you can look good in highly differentiated colors between your suit and shirt. It does not necessarily means you need to have a dark suit. You can be wearing a light gray suit but choosing a darker shade of blue shirt within and it brings out the your face as the focal point. The role of the tie is less obvious in your case. It should be well color coordinated against the dress shirt or suit and should not have as much profound impact than the shirt and suit.
