Choosing the Right Tie Knots for Spread Collars

Fashion Advice:
The best tie knots to fit dress shirts with spread collars.

Question:

Hello, I'm wondering how to reconcile two points taken from your site. I'm fairly tall and slim, so I have a long face and a long neck. I understand that a high & wide collar would likely suit me. I also understand that a thinner tie is likely more suitable for my frame (and taste), but probably incapable of forming a knot to fill the collar spread. I'm wondering what might be the best, perhaps most classic, way of solving this dilemma. Thank you.

Answer:

Yes indeed a slim tie is the in thing nowadays. To suit your face, a slim tie is still possible but you can change the type of collar to suit your face. You can consider trying a rounded collar or a spread collar that is not wide, known as medium spread. These types of collars will fit your face well. In addition they can allow a good slim tie to fit between the spread.

When you are going for a spread collar, it would be advisable for you to avoid a four-in-hand. The reason is the knot created might be too small to fill a spread collar. Instead I have found that a Windsor or Half-Windsor would be the choices to fit such collars.
