Fashion Advice 14: Can we wear a vest with double-breasted suits? Is three-button suits a staple in men's wear?
Question:
I have a two-fold question that I asked the GQ "Style Guy" and never got an answer. I have a double breasted suit, and I have seen different guys wear a double breasted suit with a vest. This seems to be a bit of overkill to me. Is it common for men to wear double breasted suits with vests?
My next question is, I recently gave som of my old suits to a charity thrift store because I didn't feel comfortable wearing them due to the change in the style from two-button suits to three-button style.I still have a few two-button suits, but prefer the three-buttons.
Are three-button suits going to be, or, have they been a staple in menswear for years? I noticed that in the early twentieth century photos of men like Einstien and Freud, they were wearing three-button suits. Is That more because of their European origins?
Answer:
Personally it is difficult for me to imagine someone wearing a vest with a double-breasted suit. Why? It becomes an overkill to me. The over-lapping of the suit and the structuring of the buttons made it a formal and business looking style. Adding on the vest adds on its formality and it also overwork the inner portion of the suit together with the dress shirt.
For your next question, 3-button suits are not a staple in men's wear. It is the fashion trend then that brought about its popularity within men's fashion in the early 1920s. Currently, the trend is moving toward 2-button suits. Refer to "Choosing between 2-button or 3-button suits" for more information.
