Denim Trends Fall Winter 2010 - 11
In recent seasons, fashion has presented men with the option to wear their jeans to fit snugly - rather like their female counterparts. While that '80s rocker look is still prevalent in some circles, 2010 trends have loosened up jeans for men. The latest denim styles are cut straighter and with more room in the thigh. One of the biggest trends you'll see this fall is distressed denim. Jeans will be ripped, faded, tea-dyed, and splattered with paint to create the effect that they are well-aged. This trend goes well with this year's resurgence of grunge fashion. However, men can still be open to wearing their distressed jeans with otherwise sharp ensembles, as seen on the DSquared2 Fall/Winter 2010 runway.

On the flip side of the distressed trend, there's also a growing appearance of jeans that are stiff and starchy with dark, unfaded washes. These recall a '50s style and are often seen worn with hems rolled up to show the contrast of the light-colored inside of the jeans. Bottega Veneta presents this fall trend in a very stylized way, with a slicked pompadour hairdo and white socks. Billy Reid's take on the style is a bit more "down home" - yet it shows how to wear the jeans with a shirt and tie.

Denim in men's fashion, however, is much more than just jeans. Denim jackets are a popular item for 2010. The basic jean jacket with be an easy wardrobe staple to find, from department store brands to high-end labels like Rock & Republic. The garment received an opulent makeover on the William Rast runway, with the sleeves rendered in leather and the collar in high-volume fur. Meanwhile, G-Star completely revamped the concept of a jean jacket and used denim to craft pea coat-style outerwear.

For fall 2010 - and seasons beyond - denim is not limited to jeans and jackets. Shirts made from the humble fabric will be seen in casual wear and even evening wear, in some cases. From left to right: denim shirts by Bespoken, Burberry Prorsum, and Giorgio Armani.

At any rate, wearing a sharply tailored denim shirt will convey your interest in being fashion forward. Movie actor Jake Gyllenhaal appears on the cover of GQ's May 2010 issue in a light denim shirt and khaki suit. This magazine is considered by many to be the definitive men's style bible and Gyllenhaal is known for his easy-going, but suave style.
