How to Coordinate Dress Shoes
with Mens Clothing

Many men has been pondering this issue: How do I coordinate dress shoes with mens suits or mens dress pants? Which color dress shoes should be appropriate? The black one or the brown one?

No matter what color is your mens suits or mens dress pants, the choice of a black or brown dress shoe does not matter at all. It will easily blend in against your dark gray, navy or even pin-stripe gray suits. The reason is simple because these two colors are the most fundamental in mens dress shoes.

The main question we should be ask ourselves before proceeding to coordinate dress shoes with our attire is how formal do we want to achieve?

Black dress shoes are always more formal that brown shoes. But black can come in glossy patent or shiny polished or plain matt. The formality of the dress shoes is dependent on the level of shine. That is the reason why black tie affairs usually require tuxedoes with glossy patent dress shoes.

Whenever you give your dress shoes a good shine, the glow will bring out the formality and classiness without a doubt.

Now the less formal but more stylish way to coordinate dress shoes with your clothing is to choose brown. The darkness of the brown will determine the level of formality perceived. That is, dark brown being more formal than light brown.

I have always love wearing dark brown dress shoes over conventional black ones. The brown color seems to bring out more texture and content which blends absolutely well with my suits or dress pants.

If dark gray or navy suits worn with black dress shoes, the overall appeal is well-blended since it is a blend of dark or monochromatic colors. Yet the addition of dark brown dress shoes brings out constrast that is stylishly put together.

It would be nice to attempt wearing light brown shoes during business casuals. The lightness of the color around the feet sets the pace for a relaxing feel even when worn with formal dark colored suits. To coordinate dress shoes this way is to break from the norm and creates diversity in the change of color flow from top and bottom.

Lastly and most importantly, always wear the same color belt as your dress shoes. That is, black belt with black shoes and brown belt with brown shoes.
